When my son Jourdan was in grade school, we would dress up in costumes and walk a block or two in the Village Halloween Parade. At that time, it was just a local Village parade that ended up in Washington Square Park. This year, I decided to join my colleague Donna Henes in her Blessing Band. I thought it would be a fun way to celebrate one of my favorite holidays.
Little did I know that it would be such a profound and moving ritual. About 30 of us – all dressed in white – gathered together on Spring Street. We were the opening act so to speak, and were charged with the task of blessing NY and making it safe.
After our group ritual to connect and ground our energies, we began to move out with our “magic wands”, glitter, bubbles and balloons to interact with the almost 2 million people who had come to watch this amazing tradition. Our intention was to bless the people and the streets of New York.
At first, it was just fun to be apart of the parade but then, I really started to connect with individuals. As we “showered them with blessings” some people bowed, others asked us for blessings of health or prosperity, while others just reached out to receive the blessings we were offering. We blessed children, grandparents, young couples, teens and of course, the police. I was privileged to even bless the street I live on. The more we walked, the deeper I went into the sacred energy that comes with actually giving a blessing. I was reminded how simple acts of kindness can affect those around us in profound ways. And many of these strangers offered their blessings back to me.
On this Veteran’s Day I want to suggest that we all offer blessings to each other…silently and out loud. Let us bless the men and women who put their lives on the line each day to bring peace to the world knowing as the warriors find peace so shall we.
