In my sermon at Unity NY last month I told the story of the Golden Buddha found in 1957. A monastery in Thailand was being relocated and a group of monks were put in charge of moving a giant clay Buddha. In the middle of the move one of the monks noticed a crack in its surface and started to examine it, and saw a reflection within the crack. Once they started chipping away, they were totally surprised to discover that the clay covered Buddha was actually made of solid gold. Most historians believe the Buddha had been covered with clay hundreds of years earlier to prevent an attacking army from stealing it. Tragically all the monks were killed in the attack, so the secret of the solid gold Buddha was concealed and it remained covered with clay until that fateful day in 1957.
Like the Buddha’s clay covering, our own defenses, many masks & socialized personas serve as an outer shell to protect us – sometimes keeping our true souls expression from being seen. Although we do need protection at times, we have a tendency to create more and more layers and then end up seeing the world through a distorted lens. Now is the time to look at what comprises our own outer shell of protection and seek the wisdom within the cracks since it is helping to define our future.
As Leonard Cohen said so beautifully:
“Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.”
Life always presents us with opportunities to crack open to our Divine potential, but we need to have the courage to chip away at our outer shell to discover our true value and soul’s passion. (tweet it)
